28 years and going strong:
Clinton Industries, York, PA
"Bonded at the hip" describes the relationship between Joe and the owner of Clinton Industries, Robert Clinton Bohn. "Bob and I keep refining this wonderful company with each passing year-since its start in 1980, Joe says. "Clinton Industries has provided for many people and their families in York, PA and across the US. What energy! It wants to grow faster than we can sometimes manage; it always keeps us on our toes. For me, it just doesn't get better than this. Watching Clinton Industries grow is like watching one my children grow. The key people at Clinton; Steve Barnett and Beth Ruppert, do the work of an entire army and perform miracles on pretty regular occasion."
"For me, it just doesn't get better than this. Watching Clinton Industries grow is like watching one my children grow."
Making the international jump:
Solon Manufacturing, Solon, ME
Having worked with Solon in 1987, I witnessed a decade of flawless quality control of domestic manufacturing at their central Maine plant and then helped with their conversion to a combined also domestic producer and importer. As the Market changed we also had to change with it or die. The conversion from domestic to Chinese products proved a three-year nightmare for all involved; learning the import game first hand is not for the faint-hearted.
"My responsibility was to retain customers throughout the many QC issues that always accompany the transition to imported products, Joe says. "Relinquishing control of your manufacturing process to a factory 7,000 miles away isn't easy.
We have been working on several new products about to be launched in 2009. The market appears to be changing again and the Manufacturing of these simple but hard to make products seem to be migrating home. I know a few people for sure who wouldn't mind seeing that happen.
Transitioning to the medical marketplace:
Doran Scales Inc., Batavia, IL
Doran is a successful commercial scale manufacture that hired Joe to guide them in becoming a player in the Healthcare market. "Developing a superior product line with Mark Podl, Doran's owner was fairly easy for me because they were already very strong in the design, engineering and manufacturing of incredibly robust weighing and measuring devices. Doran is already used to creating products that will withstand environments much more hostile than healthcare," Joe says.
"Doran's Healthcare division is scheduled for an official launch January 2009. Providers will welcome the well thought out features of these scales. Distribution sources will find the service driven culture of Doran a refreshing change in this category as well," Joe predicts.
Branding-a comprehensive approach:
Barrington Diagnostics, Barrington, IL
Barrington Diagnostics, Barrington, IL, (formerly BV Medical), manufactures a wide range of portable medical equipment. The company retained Joe to develop a Medical Surgical Division to facilitate the marketing for their broad line of hand held medical instruments. This engagement included devising a total branding strategy for the company and its several divisions. This project also included further refinement of the firm's Medical/ Surgical product line and marketing support comprising a new catalog and web site, developing an advertising and creative services department, and the development of a national representation network and national distribution agreements.
An eco-friendly product triumph:
Erving Healthcare, Erving, MA
Most manufacturers of paper-based disposables use virgin fiber as their raw material. Joe leveraged environmental support and the annual Earth Day observance to position the market's smallest and only recycled disposable paper manufacturer as an environmentally friendly product source. The campaign was so successful that the company walked away with one of the largest medical disposables accounts in the field, Meer Dental. This conquest catapulted Erving into its current role as a major player.
